If The Young and the Restless can be faulted for being a bit soft, it’s possible that American Idol is a bit too sharp, even though its viewers are generally described as being less than so. Now, it’s not a bad thing to see 720 progressive video exceptionally well lit, but when looking at some of the contestants––not to mention the less than perfectly preserved judges Simon Cowell (he’s the nasty Brit) and former pop star Paula Abdul––it’s evident that time has been less kind to them than Cowell generally is to untalented contestants.

From a technical standpoint, Idol is very well produced. When the musical performances are good, the Dolby Digital soundtrack sounds great. When they aren’t so good, as is often the case in the opening weeks of each season, you can hear and a see every bent and mangled note in excruciating detail.

If you can stand the off-key performances––and Cowell’s snide, nasty comments––American Idol may be as good an example of video-based 720 progressive HDTV as there is on TV today.
