TV-on-DVD Review Produced by: Universal
Distributed by: Universal
Price: $59.98 The greatest science-fiction TV show ever is finally available on DVD. OK, well
the American version of the show is now available on DVD. Previous DVD versions
consisted of just the reimagined miniseries and the subsequent British version
of the series, which really only had some different opening music. For a recap
of the story, see my review of the show in our Summer 2005 issue.
The DVD
picture preserves the video quality of the show, which is to say it’s no sharper
or steadier than when it first aired. It’s clean, though, and anamorphically
produced, which is great and makes it look about as good as when the show aired
in high def. (This says less about the DVD than it does about the HD broadcast.)
Sound quality is excellent, as the 5.1 soundtrack adds ambience to the otherwise
front-heavy effects and music.
The DVD’s extra features are interesting,
consisting of outtakes, mini documentaries, and commentaries, though they have
all been available on the show’s website. I’m not sure if this is really a stab
at the box set––as it is a nice feature about the website––and it’s great to
have them all on the DVD. The inclusion of the reimagined miniseries would be
awesome if the picture quality wasn’t so crappy. Fortunately, the content of the
show makes up for it.
