Thankfully, Universal HD’s rebroadcast of the Sci-Fi Channel’s recently
“reimagined” (just call it a remake for frak’s sake) new original series
Battlestar Galactica abandons the space gadgetry geekfest typical of its genre
for a darker, more human drama dealing with topics like sex, love, politics,
power, and religion. Flawed characters abound, creating complex problems that
fortunately are never easily solved with “flux capacitors” or convenient
disruptions of the “space-time continuum.” The new series bears little
resemblance to the original, a late 70’s Star Wars knockoff—save for the general
premise and character names—and instead takes on an almost always gripping life
of its own.
Originally shot in 24 frame, 1080p HD, the image is
intentionally softened to preserve the “look” of the show. (OK, it’s so the more
“experienced” actors and inexpensive sets don’t become too obvious. )The program
still looks substantially sharper, cleaner, and more vibrant than when it
originally aired on the Sci-Fi Channel earlier this year. Plus, the HD
broadcast’s 5.1 soundtrack is more involving than Sci-Fi’s two-channel offering.
Battlestar Galactica may not be as demonstration-worthy as most things on
Discovery HD, but the program makes good use of the high-definition format, in
addition to being great television and the sole reason I subscribe to DirecTV’s
HD channel package.
