 Blind Justice

Ah yes, another story of a TV detective who loses his sight, returns to the force complete with gun (“Man, he sounds like a perp, so I guess I’ll shoot”), and triumphs over evil. Blind Justice takes over for NYPD Blue as Steven Bochco’s new Tuesday night ABC entry with another gritty New York police drama. Far less edgy than Blue, Justice attempts to differentiate itself with slow-motion, fast and furious cuts, fades, and dramatic black screens (mid-scene, even). Whether that is your cup of tea or not, it should at a minimum be something of a showcase for HDTV.

Unfortunately, it’s not. Maybe it’s just here in Philadelphia, but ABC’s film-based video always looks softer and grainier than that on other networks. Since straight video (such as Monday Night Football) looks good, it makes me wonder if ABC goes cheap on film-to-HD conversion. And very little is done with the show’s Dolby Digital audio soundtrack, which is virtually indistinguishable from the Pro Logic analog soundtrack. What could be an intriguing show is unfortunately undone by both artistic and technical shortcuts.
