Have the major broadcast networks changed their names to Always Bruckheimer
Content, Celebrating Bruckheimer Shows, and Network of Bruckheimer
Consolidation? With ten shows between three networks, Jerry Bruckheimer’s
television division seems to have a lock on the mega-producer crown. Cold Case
is one of the more interesting crime drama offerings available, delving into the
methodical (and in real life, painfully tedious) legwork that long-unsolved
cases necessitate. Not quite “ripped from the headlines,” Cold Case brings
viewers a fascinating glimpse of the less glamorous police work involved in
going back in time (in some cases, decades) to revisit cases once thought
unsolvable, but have remained open.
HD picture quality is reminiscent of
other shows originally shot on film––not as especially sharp as HD can be, but
still colorful and vibrant in its widescreen presentation. (The SD broadcast
version is a non-letterboxed panned and scanned affair.) The surround audio
quality isn’t up to cinema standards, as this is one of the numerous HD network
shows still provided in Dolby Digital 2.0, and the dynamic range is also
necessarily compromised for compatibility with conventional analog stereo
broadcasts.
