With the success of shows like Lost, there’s a slew of new series that have
scary underlying premises, including Invasion, Supernatural, and a woman as
president in Commander in Chief. Sexist jokes aside, the show is more
frightening for its mediocrity. Not to mention that Geena Davis would presumably
agree to work on this—a West Wing knockoff mixed with the look of The OC—solely
to support the chance for us to see a woman as president. Joan Allen’s character
went farther to present a woman capable of leading a country as vice president
in the feature film The Contender, showing that quality of content, and not
merely title, matters. Equally as disappointing is the show’s video
quality. ABC typically produces excellent-looking shows. Less so here. Colors
are natural and vibrant and the show is lit much brighter than Wing, but that
does little to hide the video noise that lingers in backgrounds and shadows.
Audio is equally unexciting, though admittedly the shows I watched (OK, let’s be
honest, I couldn’t sit through more than one) were mostly dialogue
driven.
