 E-Ring

Network: NBC

The story lines are sometimes predictable, the acting can be a bit heavy-handed, and the action is often more cerebral than physical. But you’ve just got to love a weekly series that eliminates regular characters as readily as New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner changes personnel.

E-Ring, produced by TV action maven Jerry Bruckheimer, is that kind of show. Although such moves run the risk of removing a character that viewers may have come to embrace, it also gives E-Ring an edge missing from too many weekly television series.

There are other things to like about E-Ring, like its crisp 1080i HD video accompanied by an enveloping 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack. The show’s fast pacing and short scenes also help convey a sense of tension. Although not as clever as the short-lived The Agency or as frenetic as Alias, E-Ring is nevertheless a frequently engaging hour of action and political intrigue. I’ll continue to watch it until someone decides it would be a good idea to bump off Dennis Hopper’s character.
