 Everybody Loves Raymond
 Mike McGann
 Spring 2004

Produced by: Worldwide Pants/CBS Productions
Network: CBS
Scheduled: Monday, 9 to 9:30 p.m.
Reviewed on: KYW Philadelphia; Channel 3 (26 digital)
The mainstay of CBS’s popular Monday night lineup, Everybody Loves Raymond, is a completely inoffensive show that many people consider hilarious. I don’t, in truth, and rarely if ever watched the show before my local station began airing it in HDTV. While I usually would opt to watch the PBS HD loop instead, the technical excellence of CBS’s digital broadcasts have lured me more than once to spend a half hour ruminating on one pained expression after another on Ray Romano’s face. Shot on film and then transferred to HD video, the image is routinely warm and natural on screen, and as I’ve generally found on CBS sitcom broadcasts, the film transfers are meticulous and excellent. This, combined with very little in the way of digital noise from KYW’s transmitter (unlike other transmitters in the Philadelphia market), makes for some of the most-impressive HDTV pictures available. Unfortunately, CBS isn’t big on 5.1 Dolby Digital audio and doesn’t transmit the soundtrack that way, as was the case the most recent time I watched.
