Grey’s Anatomy—a sort of dramatic Scrubs by way of The O.C.—is predictable and, for a medical dramedy, about as scientifically accurate as Charmed. But it does sport an endearing ensemble cast of characters (stereotyped as they may be), and with reality shows still proliferating like broadcast cancer, sometimes that’s all you need.

While the character-driven nature of the series does not lend itself to an ooo-ahh-inspiring high-definition experience, ABC’s 720p presentation is rock solid, with a striking mix of warm and cool color palettes and cinematography that rises above the standard two shot, yet knows better than to get too artsy. And the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound doesn’t do anything that Pro Logic II couldn’t do—perhaps better—but remains clean and focused.

Yes, it all sounds sort of average, but somehow Grey’s Anatomy rises above the sum of its parts. It doesn’t work because of the dialogue, which runs the gamut from good to good enough, and it certainly doesn’t work because of the inappropriate pop music video montages (one of which revolved around the death of a patient in the first episode). The characters, however, make it worth a look
