There are many options to see spurting blood in HDTV these days, from ER to CSI, but there’s only one place you can see a blood clot break off in a leg vein and cause a stroke: Fox’s new drama, House.

OK, from a dramatic standpoint, the show probably has a few too many TV clichés––from the cranky-but-brilliant protagonist to the opinionated female boss who exudes a hint of sexual chemistry toward the lead character––but none of it is obnoxious and besides, that’s not the great thing about the show.

What is cool and different, especially in HD, are the CGI-rendered animations of things going on inside the body, like a heart beating or neurons firing. A quick check with my spouse, whose first name starts with “Dr.,” confirms the Gray’s Anatomy-like accuracy of the animations, which really add to the realism of the show. And of course, they are just amazing to watch in HDTV detail.

As is usual for Fox shows, there is a detailed and clear surround track. It still seems odd that the network bringing us such gems as Who’s Your Daddy? does the best job at creating film-like HDTV sound, but it remains to be true.
