 Huff

Network: Showtime
Scheduled: Sunday, 10 p.m.

Possibly taking their cue from the Seinfeld playbook, the writers of Huff have positioned Hank Azaria’s dour-faced character, psychiatrist Craig Huffstodt, as the centerpiece of this finely crafted ensemble drama, where Huff’s world is the core storyline. Actually, it’s more of a dual storyline affair, where Huff’s psychiatric practice provides us the guilty pleasure of peeking in on other people’s most personal affairs, along with a view of how someone who dispenses well-meaning professional advice has to deal with oft-times similar turmoil in his own life.

As with Seinfeld, the essence of Huff is a mix of the eponymous central character and the people in his life, including Huff’s mother, Izzy, and best friend, Russell, who are the show’s most compelling regular characters. The show’s reoccurring guest stars help round out the series, as well.

A film-originated program, Huff in HD is a full widescreen presentation, with the entire frame being used, along with an unusual lateral pan and split-second morphing scene change, in lieu of hard edits. Dialog drives this show, and the sound is mostly up front and center, where it counts.
