Having been mesmerized and sometimes terrified by Invasion since it
premiered last fall, I’m convinced that creator/executive producer Shaun Cassidy
is possessed by the luminescent alien life forms that occupy the waters around
Homestead, Fla., where the science-fiction show is set. How else can you explain
Cassidy’s ability to deliver an out-of-this-world series that makes its
scintillating lead-in, Lost, seem almost dull by comparison? Cassidy’s
efforts are bolstered by some scarily good acting from leads William Fichtner,
Kari Matchett and Eddie Cibrian. It also benefits from a sharp 720p HD picture.
Although the cameras rarely take full advantage of the 16:9 widescreen
format—most of the action and close-ups are centered on screen—they do make the
most of on-location shooting in southern Florida. The state’s swampy southern
topography and lush vegetation are wonderful backdrops to the series’ foreboding
tale of aliens taking over humans and civilization.
That story has been told
innumerable times since the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but
Cassidy’s version benefits from a 5.1 digital surround soundtrack. Often-eerie
background music and the occasional use of directional sound effects help keep
viewers immersed in one of television’s most gripping dramas
