A little bit Harry Potter, a little bit Lord of the Rings, Kameo: Elements of Power is a middle-earth fantasy game that pits the eponymous princess heroine against a range of goblins and monsters on her quest to rescue her kidnapped family and claim the throne of the Elfin kingdom. Not just a simple shoot-’em-up role player, the game presents different challenges along the way that suit the unique capabilities of 10 warriors’ individual talents.

An Xbox 360 launch title, Kameo is an HDTV-rendered (720p) game that combines a rich color palette with vividly detailed scenery––including day and night lighting––along with stunning pools and streams with nary a jaggie in sight. The soundtrack sports excellent use of in-game Dolby Digital and features split surrounds that are compatible with EX 6.1 and 7.1 setups. The setup menu even features display-specific choices (LCD, CRT, DLP) with a gray scale to ensure the best brightness setting for low black reproduction.

Adept gamers might want to rent this one, as the roughly 15 hours of gameplay is somewhat less than the usual and could be blown through in a weekend. Although the Xbox Live functionality is a disappointment, Kameo is an excellent game nonetheless and suitable for those looking for a more brain-stimulating experience than hard-core shoot-’em-ups.
