TV-On-DVD Review Produced by: Steven Bochco Productions
Distributed by: Buena Vista Home Entertainment Price: $59.99
For all its startling twists and turns, the biggest surprise of Lost: The
Complete First Season is that it still packs a heck of a punch the second time
around. Perhaps its lasting appeal stems from the characters, whose stories seem
even more complex in the shadow of future knowledge. Or maybe it’s the fact that
every minor plot point seems to have been meticulously planned from the
beginning—the aha! moments that result from recognizing the subtle seeds of big
payoffs that seemed so shocking the first time around.
For whatever reason,
Lost holds up extremely well in the transition from HDTV to the
supplement-packed DVD. Granted, the visuals lose the slightest bit of their
sparkle, especially the gorgeous tropical vistas and the nighttime sequences,
which come off as a bit grainy. But those who haven’t been spoiled by the HD
broadcasts will be blown away by the astounding detail and luscious earthy color
palette, not to mention the cranked-to-eleven 5.1 soundtrack, which starts off
with a bang and only improves as the season progresses. Whether this is your
second ride on Oceanic Flight 815 or you missed your connection the first time
around, Lost: The Complete First Season is everything that TV-on-DVD should be.
