 Monday Night Football
 Mike McGann
 Spring 2004

Produced by: ABC Sports
Network: ABC
Scheduled: Monday, 9 to midnight (EST)
Reviewed on: WPVI Philadelphia; Channel 6 (64 digital)
The Titanic. The Hindenburg. The first season of Monday Night Football in HDTV (1999). OK, no one died during that first season of MNF in HD, but you get the idea. It was such a mess that the network skipped the next three seasons before gingerly retaking the field this year. Thankfully, it appears that we can all put away the lifeboats. For the most part, the production is finally geared to HDTV, with the mere mortals watching on lesser TVs getting a downconverted version. Picture detail is excellent but for some occasional blockiness, which could be just a local problem. Other than the occasional jarring, grainy standard-definition shot, either from the overhead camera or from a replay at an odd angle, the picture is uniformly good. The audio, in Dolby Digital 5.1, is OK, but it doesn’t come near Fox’s Dolby Digital audio, which is completely involving.
