 NYPD Blue
 Mike McGann
 Spring 2004

Produced by: Steven Bochco Productions
Network: ABC
Scheduled: Tuesday, 10 to 11 p.m.
Reviewed on: WPVI Philadelphia; Channel 6 (64 digital)
Featuring some of the better cinematography on television, NYPD Blue should shine in its translation to HDTV, and for the most part, it does. Detail in the 720p broadcast is excellent, revealing more of Andy Sipowicz’s facial pores than we might want to see. The blemish on the video quality appears to be video noise, which becomes obvious at times as a kind of shimmering in the background. The soundtrack, presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, is good, but it would be even better if the rear channels were about two decibels louder.

A lot of neat stuff can be heard only with an ear right next to the speaker. Generally speaking, this is a good example of HDTV, but it could be a showcase with some minor fixes.
