This might be something of a geek’s fantasy come true: A genius mathematician solves crimes for the FBI using math. The show is produced by the guys who directed Blade Runner (Ridley Scott) and Top Gun (Tony Scott).

Obviously, the premise is kind of silly––yes, law enforcement agencies use statistical modeling for many things, but I’m hoping there’s no guy cranking it all out on a chalkboard like a seventh-grade algebra problem––so you have to shut your brain off a bit to enjoy it.

Not surprisingly, coming from the Scott brothers, the show is shot well and looks every bit the Hollywood movie, making it an above average offering in HDTV. Although it uses a lot of interior scenes, Numb3rs plays with light well and may, at times, make you feel bad about buying an HDTV with weak black-level performance. As usual, the CBS transfer from film is clean and the surround soundtrack is good, but not spectacular.

While Numb3rs may make you want to get a better HD set, many people will find it a very enjoyable way to get the most from their high-definition experience.
