TV-On-DVD Review Produced by: Apostle, The Cloudland Company,
DreamWorks Television, and Sony Pictures Television. Distributed by: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Often misogynistic, sometimes profane, occasionally sacrilegious, and always
politically incorrect, Rescue Me: The Complete First Season stars Denis Leary as
a backsliding alcoholic New York City firefighter coping (often poorly) with the
stresses and heartaches of a post-9/11 world, his failed marriage, and regular
visits from the ghost of his dead cousin. But to say that the show is about
firefighters or relationship problems or post-traumatic-stress-induced
hallucinations would be missing the point––at its heart, Rescue Me is a show
about modern men; about testosterone and modern sensitivity, wisdom, and
ignorance, all running a four-way stop on the road of life. It’s a beautiful
seesaw of comedy and tragedy that deftly balances on a fulcrum of humanity, and
if not for Leary’s ability to assemble the perfect ensemble cast, the series
would be a scattered mess with noble intent.
Sony Pictures’ DVD release
spreads 13 episodes over three discs with a healthy host of extras. While the
2.0 audio would have benefited from a 5.1 remix, it manages to offer a decent
bottom end and a reasonable amount of dimensionality during action sequences.
Thankfully, the anamorphic widescreen transfer is beyond reproach, splendidly
capturing the show’s cinematic framing, brilliantly bold lighting, and gritty
detail.
