 David Birch-Jones
 12/01/2005

Produced by: HBO & BBC
Network: HBO
Scheduled: Sunday 9 p.m.

My DVR probably emits a silent and exasperated sigh when I dutifully delete the timer setting for HBO’s weekly HD program after a series’ finale, only to fire it up again the following week when the next series starts. Case in point: Rome, a joint effort between HBO and the BBC, seeks to combine visual and dramatic historical accuracy. The series depicts the era’s (50 B.C.) principal political and military characters, including Julius Caesar and his nemesis Pompey. Once you get past the cast’s proper British accents and the modern haircuts of the male lead actors, the show grabs hold and doesn’t let go.

A $100 million plus production, Rome is as lush and visually stimulating as anything you’re likely to see at your local movieplex, and looks nothing short of glorious in its high-definition presentation. And the sound design isn’t small screen either, featuring a full 5.1 soundtrack with impressive use of the surround channels for both subtle ambience and full-on put-you-there effects during the many action sequences, which will keep your subwoofer occupied, too. One thing is for sure, Rome will keep my HD DVR busy on Sunday evenings.
