They had me from the first episode. All the elements of a great series are here—a superb cast of regulars along with an equally outstanding cast of occasionals and consistently top-notch writing and directing. From the now well-known opening scene that depicts somebody meeting their maker, oft times in bizarre and macabre ways, to the faux direct marketing commercials aimed at funeral home operators, Six Feet Under has enjoyed critical and commercial success from the start.

As with other HBO series, the excellent high-def results come directly from topflight cinematic production values. Of special note, the lighting design is superb, with interior scenes in the Fisher & Diaz funeral home suitably dark and shadowy at appropriate times, showing just how important it is for a viewer to properly optimize their display’s brightness and contrast settings to get the best result. A dialog-driven show with demure surround-sound effects, the 5.1 soundtrack is appropriately a front channels oriented affair.

This is series television at its best. Sadly, this past season was the final one, but thanks to DVD releases and HBO repeats, SFU won’t be disappearing from TV screens anytime soon.
