Dawson’s Creek meets DC Comics in this adolescent teen drama about the world’s favorite superhero. The WB’s take on Superman’s formative years— often cheesy, sometimes melodramatic yet oddly entertaining—mixes some of the legend’s back story with pop music to attract a much younger audience.

Broadcast in 1080i with 5.1 channels of audio, the show looks and sounds great and may be worth watching for this reason alone. The soundtrack makes good use of the 5.1 speaker arrangement, particularly during action sequences; the tornado in the second season’s premier episode is a good example. The show’s vibrant colors and bright outdoor scenes, fortunately shot in beautiful British Columbia instead of Kansas, come across superbly in HD and substantially better than, say, the show’s supposed special effects, which seem like they’ve been created on an iMac. The wardrobe department continues the comic-book color scheme with Clark Kent’s (Tom Welling) Gapesque version of the super suit: no cape or knee-high boots; just a bright red jacket and blue jeans. It’s worth a look, if only to demo your system.
