A revival of a hit music program from the 1970s and '80s, Soundstage features such mainstream rockers, country rockers and pop acts as Lucinda Williams, Tori Amos, John Hiatt, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Michael McDonald, Ashford & Simpson, Lyle Lovett and Alison Krauss. The concert format is similar to Austin City Limits, but the look is closer to Sessions at 54th Street.

Shot and broadcast in 1080i and Dolby Digital 5.1, Soundstage would seem to embody the best that digital video has to offer, but every episode I've seen has been riddled with glitches—sync problems, audio dropouts, picture breakups and severe pixelization with each change of the camera angle. Where the problems lie is unknown. During rare moments when the image is stable, it's clear that the whole Soundstage production is terribly underlit, the colors completely saturated and the audience in near-total darkness. It's a valiant attempt to capture the energy and ambiance of a live concert, but one that falls far short of its goal.
