When the real world becomes too painful for millions of liberal Americans, The
West Wing offers an hour of mental vacation with the Kennedy-esque president,
Jeb Bartlett. And thanks to an excellent HD transfer, fans can get a
crystal-clear look at White House sets that have more than a passing resemblance
to the real thing.
I’m not entirely sure why, but this show looks better than
most of NBC’s HD offerings and seems to match the predominantly better transfers
from CBS. While the show no longer has the frenetic pace of the first couple of
seasons when it was produced by creator Aaron Sorkin (who also wrote the film
The American President and created the cult favorite TV series, SportsNight),
the lush visuals are still in place. Now run by John Wells––the creative force
behind ER––the show is one of the few on TV that is currently presented only in
widescreen (letterboxed on standard TV), so there are no compromises to
accommodate the much larger community of 4:3 screen owners.
The West Wing
offers film-like images on a weekly basis, and a well- done Dolby Digital
soundtrack. So whether you watch to make fun of Democrats, or to enjoy a weekly
fantasy of seeing the minority party in charge, the show offers an opportunity
to get the most from your HDTV gear.
