Once upon a time, a shocking number of people worried about what happened in a
mythical Midwestern town called Genoa City. Sure, The Young and the Restless is
the number one “daytime drama” (don’t call it a soap opera or you’ll get smacked
by fans). For a small minority of gearheads, though, it used to be the only HD
programming available during the day—the time when most people shop for
televisions—to evaluate the HDTV performance of various devices.
Back then it
was a godsend. Now, though, I probably wouldn’t use it for critical viewing.
While it’s produced well, the show is intentionally shot with a bit of soft
focus, or more accurately, a filtered look. This is fairly typical in daytime
dramas––and even a handful of nighttime shows––to help their aging stars look
decent. We’re not talking super soft, but just a picture that doesn’t do the
most with the 1920 by 1080 interlaced image resolution. The standard stereo
audio mix is nothing special, either.
When it was the only game in town, The
Young and the Restless seemed like pretty good HDTV programming. But a quick
flip to Discovery HD or PBS shows why it’s no longer featured on a gearhead’s
dance card.
