Home remodeling is a popular sport.
So it's no surprise that Trading Spaces—sponsored by The Home Depot—has become one of the most popular reality TV shows. Each week, neighbors in different cities overhaul a room in each other's homes. They get $1,000, the aid of a carpenter and a designer, and 48 hours to complete the job. The results are sometimes dazzling but usually disastrous, with the hapless victims pretending that they really like their new Ferrari-red dining rooms.
Shot, edited and mastered on high-definition equipment, the show's images range from good to very good, with crisp highlights and excellent details. The show's design team tends to favor garish colors that really pop in HD. The Dolby 2.0 stereo soundtrack is generally clear; a 5.1 soundtrack would lend
a greater sense of realism. The Learning Channel claims to broadcast the show every Saturday night, but San Francisco station
KNTV-DT has it Saturday mornings. Downconverted reruns can be seen at least twice a day on most cable systems.
