Sure, the headline is a bit sensationalist, but how else are we going to get you to read about test DVDs? First out of the gate after what seemed an interminable delay, Joe Kane Production’s Digital Video Essentials (DVE) is the long-awaited sequel to the popular Video Essentials program. DVE was created in the 1080p, 24-frame format for the best possible picture quality.

The program provides state-of-the-art test patterns and instructions for calibrating and evaluating the performance of your audiovisual system. The program is also available in D-Theater D-VHS at both 1080i and 720p res olutions. (DVD $24.99, D-Theater D-VHS, $89.99)

Not to be outdone, Ovation Software, creator of the Avia test DVD, has announced it will release Avia Pro. This $400, six-disc set contains nearly 1,000 newpatternswith3,000variations–everything you need for a weekend of entertainment. Also included are discs containing material from the Consumer Electronics Association’s standard method of measurement for DVD players; the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineer’s monitoring technology test signals; RPG Acoustic Corp.’s Room Optimizer and Room Sizing software programs; and test patterns from Genesis Microchip for testing scalar and video processor performance. The whole package was scheduled for release by Christmas 2003.
