Pummeling its competition with repetitious marketing terms, Pioneer announced the addition of two new displays to its PureVision line of plasma products: the 50-inch PDP-5040HD ($14,500) and the 43-inch PDP-4340HD ($10,500), which include a number of "pure"features. One feature called Pure Drive provides a completely digital video signal path from input to output, even for analog sources.

The Pure Cinema feature, when upconverting video signals, not only recognizes and compensates for the 3:2 frame sequence of film-based video content, but also can eliminate it and create a 3:3 sequence in its place. The new 72-Hz refresh rate prevents the typical motion jutter caused by film’s uneven 3:2 frame sequence. Last but not least, Pioneer offers Pure-Acedt II. OK, so we made that last term up. Pioneer calls it just ACE II, or advanced continuous emission display technology, which uses 10-bit video processing to create smooth transitions from dark to light and more than a billion colors. This is designed to eliminate a common plasma artifact called false contouring. Both models should be available by the time you read this.
